About Lyn: Formerly a teacher, Lyn Allison was elected to the Australian Federal Parliament in 1996 and again in 2001. She chaired the Senate Environment References Committee for 7 years, negotiated 300 amendments to strengthen the EPBC and initiated several environment-related inquiries.

Since leaving the Senate, Lyn has served on numerous boards and committees of management including Fungimap. She chairs Westgate Biodiversity: Bili Nursery and Landcare.

She is particularly interested in the biodiversity that results from revegetation of urban parks with indigenous plant species and the opportunities this offers for citizen science and understanding.

Westgate Park was a highly degraded 40 ha. site, used for the Westgate Bridge construction then formed into an undulating landscape with 1/3 of its area in shallow wetlands. It is 5km from Melbourne CBD, surrounded by industry, has a 1km boundary on the Yarra River and is close to Port Phillip Bay.

The site was planted by volunteers over 20 years with 300+ indigenous species. The biodiversity that ‘followed’ includes 160 bird species and 70 species of fungi.

Lyn began to photograph and record fungi in the Park ten years ago, and her need for identification led her to Fungimap. She is a strong advocate for fungal science, better public knowledge about the role of fungi and their conservation. She conducts fungi forays in the Park makes occasional presentations to interested groups and has presented at conferences in Portugal and Turkey for Fungimap.
